When Your Rate Actually Changes

You got a ticket in Wyoming. Your carrier has not changed your premium yet, but you know the increase is coming. The question is when it hits and how much it adds to your household policy covering two or three vehicles.

Wyoming carriers re-rate at renewal, not mid-term. If your ticket posts to your Motor Vehicle Record three months before your policy renews, the increase appears on your renewal notice. If it posts one month after renewal, you pay your current rate for the next eleven months before the carrier applies the surcharge. The timing of the violation relative to your policy anniversary determines when you start paying more and how many months you carry the higher premium before the violation ages off your record.

The carrier re-rates at renewal, not when the ticket posts to your MVR. The gap between conviction and renewal determines how long you pay your current rate.

Wyoming Minimum Liability

$25,000 / $50,000 / $20,000

Wyoming requires $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $20,000 property damage. A ticket does not change what you must carry, but it changes what you pay to carry it.

What Drives the Size of the Increase

The violation type matters more than the fine amount. A speeding ticket 10 mph over the limit produces a smaller surcharge than reckless driving or a DUI. Wyoming does not publish a fixed surcharge schedule, so the increase varies by carrier and by how the carrier classifies the violation in its underwriting system.

Your driving history before the ticket determines how much room the carrier has to move your rate. A driver with a clean record who receives one speeding ticket stays in a standard tier with a moderate surcharge. A driver with two prior violations in three years may move to a higher-risk tier where the base rate itself is higher, and the new ticket adds a surcharge on top of that higher base.

The number of vehicles on your policy does not multiply the surcharge per vehicle. The carrier re-rates the policy as a whole, applying the surcharge once and spreading the cost across the premium. A household with three cars on one policy pays one surcharge, not three.

The carrier re-rates at renewal, not when the ticket posts to your MVR. The gap between conviction and renewal determines how long you pay your current rate before the increase appears.

How Long the Increase Lasts

Wyoming carriers look back three years from the date they pull your Motor Vehicle Record. The violation stays on your MVR for three years from the conviction date, and the surcharge stays on your premium until the violation ages past the three-year window.

If your ticket conviction date is March 15, 2025, and your policy renews every January 1, the carrier pulls your MVR in late December 2025 and applies the surcharge starting January 1, 2026. The surcharge remains on every renewal through January 1, 2028. At the January 1, 2029 renewal, the violation is older than three years and the carrier drops the surcharge.

The three-year clock starts at conviction, not citation. If you receive a ticket in June but do not resolve it in court until September, the three-year period runs from September. Delaying resolution delays the start of the lookback window but also delays when the violation ages off your record.

What Happens When You Have Multiple Vehicles

A multi-vehicle policy spreads the surcharge across the total premium. The carrier does not assign the ticket to one specific vehicle. It re-rates the policy based on the household's combined risk profile, which now includes the violation.

If you insure three vehicles and one driver receives a ticket, the carrier applies the surcharge to the policy premium. The per-vehicle cost rises, but the increase is distributed across all three vehicles rather than isolated to the one the ticketed driver uses most often. Removing a vehicle from the policy does not remove the surcharge because the surcharge follows the driver, not the vehicle.

Adding a vehicle to the policy after a ticket posts to your MVR does not trigger an immediate re-rate if you are mid-term. The carrier adds the new vehicle at the current rate tier and waits until renewal to apply the violation surcharge to the entire policy. The timing of the vehicle addition relative to your renewal date determines whether the new vehicle is rated with or without the surcharge from the start.

When Shopping After a Ticket Makes Sense

Your current carrier applies its own surcharge schedule. A competitor may classify the same violation differently or weight your clean prior record more heavily. Shopping at renewal after the ticket posts to your MVR gives you the competitor's post-violation quote, not an estimate based on a clean record that will be re-rated later.

Carriers writing in Wyoming include State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, Farmers, Liberty Mutual, Nationwide, and others. Each uses its own underwriting model. A carrier that penalizes speeding tickets heavily may be more lenient on other violation types, and vice versa. The only way to know which carrier prices your household's post-ticket profile best is to compare quotes with the violation already on your record.

Compare Carriers With the Ticket Already on Your Record

Wait until the ticket posts to your Motor Vehicle Record before requesting quotes. A quote pulled before the violation appears reflects your clean-record rate and will be re-rated upward once the carrier pulls your MVR at binding. A quote pulled after the violation posts reflects the surcharge from the start, so the price you see is the price you pay.

Request quotes from at least three carriers writing multi-vehicle policies in Wyoming. Provide the same coverage limits, deductibles, and vehicle information to each so the quotes are comparable. The carrier that offers the lowest rate for your household after the ticket may not be the carrier you used before the violation.
