What Personal Injury Protection Covers
Personal Injury Protection pays medical expenses, lost wages, and certain other costs for you and your passengers after a collision, regardless of who caused it. PIP is a no-fault coverage: it pays your household's injury costs without waiting for liability determination. Wyoming does not mandate PIP, so it appears on your policy only if you add it.
When you're structuring coverage across multiple vehicles on one policy, PIP applies per vehicle. Each car you add can carry PIP, or you can decline it vehicle by vehicle. The decision matters most when household members drive different cars regularly and you want consistent injury protection across every vehicle.

$25,000 / $50,000
Wyoming requires $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $20,000 property damage. These minimums cover injury costs you cause to others, not your own household's medical bills after a collision.

PIP Versus Medical Payments Coverage
Medical Payments coverage pays injury costs for you and your passengers after a collision, similar to PIP. The structural difference: MedPay covers only medical and funeral expenses, while PIP adds lost wages, replacement services, and survivor benefits depending on the policy. MedPay is simpler and often costs less; PIP is broader.
Many Wyoming households already carry MedPay on their existing policy without realizing it. When you're adding a second or third vehicle, check whether MedPay is present before adding PIP. Stacking both on the same vehicle rarely makes sense unless your household has high medical cost exposure and you want the wage-replacement component PIP provides.
If your household's vehicles sit on separate policies and you're considering combining them, verify which injury coverage each policy carries. One policy may have MedPay, the other PIP. Combining policies forces you to choose one structure for every vehicle, and the carrier re-rates the entire policy when you merge.
Wyoming does not require PIP or MedPay. If neither appears on your policy, your household's injury costs after a collision come from health insurance or out of pocket until liability is determined.
What PIP Pays After a Collision

Medical expenses: hospital bills, doctor visits, surgery, diagnostic imaging, physical therapy, and prescription medications related to collision injuries. PIP pays these costs regardless of who caused the collision, and it typically covers household members and passengers in your vehicle. Some policies extend coverage to you as a pedestrian or bicyclist struck by a vehicle.
Lost wages and replacement services: if a collision injury prevents you from working, PIP reimburses a portion of lost income, usually capped at a weekly maximum. Some policies also cover the cost of hiring help for household tasks you cannot perform while recovering, such as childcare or housekeeping. Survivor benefits may pay funeral expenses and a portion of lost income to dependents if a collision results in death.
PIP Limits and Deductibles
Higher limits cost more but provide greater protection if injury costs exceed the base amount.
A PIP deductible reduces your premium by requiring you to pay the first portion of injury costs out of pocket. A $500 or $1,000 deductible lowers the monthly cost but means your household absorbs that amount before PIP begins paying. When you're insuring multiple vehicles, applying the same deductible across every car simplifies claims and keeps premium predictable.
PIP does not coordinate automatically with health insurance in every state. In Wyoming, the policy terms determine whether PIP pays first or your health plan does. Read the coordination-of-benefits clause in your policy. If PIP pays first, your health insurance deductible and copays do not apply to collision injuries until PIP limits are exhausted.

When Adding PIP Makes Sense
PIP fits households where health insurance carries high deductibles or does not cover all household members who drive. The no-fault structure means your household gets reimbursed quickly, often within weeks.
Households with self-employed members or irregular income benefit from the lost-wage component. If a collision injury prevents you from working and you have no employer-paid sick leave, PIP replaces a portion of lost income. MedPay does not cover wages, so PIP is the only auto-policy option that addresses income loss.
Compare Carriers for Your Household
When you're structuring coverage for multiple vehicles, request quotes that show PIP as an optional add-on alongside your base liability and collision coverage. Carriers price PIP differently, and the cost varies by the limits and deductible you select. Some carriers bundle PIP with other injury coverages; others price it separately. Compare the total premium for your household's vehicles with and without PIP to see the actual cost difference.
